We have received exactly one (1) RSVP for the proposed No Star Break party at The Blarney Stone on February 12, 2012. Please email delvalmenshockey@gmail.com to pledge your participation. If you’ve read this website before you know the particulars already.
Black 4, Green 3 Black (7-6-1, 15 pts.) climbed back into second place with a rare defensive victory over Green, who was without the services of Dan Peace. The 7 goals scored combined marks the second lowest total in the League this season, since Blue bested Black 4-1 on November 13, 2011. It’s a fitting time for the long-awaited return of…
Matt Medeiros and Denis “The Gentleman Danger” Connell staked Black to a two goal advantage in the first, but Brian Hindes scored the first of his two goals to keep Green close. Steve Seiler’s goal at 13:36 extended the lead to 3-1 but Chip Donovan’s timely power play tally set the stage for a Green comeback in the third. Hindes’ second made it a one goal game at 4:01 of the final frame, but like so many other times this season (1-11-2, 4 pts.) Green came up short.
Blue 8, White 2
Despite rampant trash talking on Facebook and via text, an undermanned White team had its two game winning streak snapped by Blue.
Pat Georgoff, Paul Marvel and John Walker scored two goals apiece for Blue (12-2-0, 24 pts.), who outshot their opponents 17-7 in the first period and 20-10 in the third. Carmen Marchesano fluttered a dump-in from the blue line that eluded a possibly concussed goaltender to make it 2-1 at 4:35 of the first, but Blue responded with the next four goals.
DVMHL STARS of the WEEK
1. Paul Marvel (Blue) 2 G, 1 A
2. Brian Hindes (Green) 2 G

Blue 10, Green 2
Blah blah blah Blue won. Dan Wilen scored blah blah blah blah.
Reading these recaps must be as boring as it is to write them.
White 6, Black 4 White (6-6-1, 13 pts.) climbed out of a two goal third period hole to not only win the game but catch Black in the all-but-meaningless standings as well. Denis Connell’s goal at 1:52 of the second period made it 4-2 going into the final frame, necessitating a huge comeback from White.
The teams were held scoreless for the first eight minutes of the third until Dennis Reardon made it 4-3, assisted by Brett Mandel and “Steady” Eddie Floirendo. Mike Shields then tied it unassisted three minutes later. Seven minutes of tense, tight-checking hockey followed, until Jason Bock scored the game-winner with under two minutes left. White held a 16-5 shot advantage in the third period and outscored Black 4-0.
White has now won two games in a row, clearly benefiting from their mid-season free agent acquisitions coughcoughJeffStottcough. The will take on first place Blue this coming Sunday, who is currently on a four game winning streak of their own. Blue’s last loss came at the gloved hands of White on December 4th of last year.
DVMHL STARS of the WEEK
1. Dan Wilen (Blue) 4 G, 3 A
2. Jason Bock (White) 2 G (1 GWG)
3. Pat Georgoff (Blue) 2 G, 2 A
White 8, Green 7 Jeff Stott shook off the rust in his first game of the season, returning to the ice with four points to lead White in the victory. Because this is the DVMHL and No Lead Is Safe, Green did mount a furious comeback in the third period, but like a midget with vertigo …ultimately fell short. White (5-6-1, 11 pts.) benefited from a breakout game courtesy of Brett Mandel, who had two bulldogs and an assist.
White’s Dennis Reardon also returned to the score sheet in triumphant fashion netting a hat trick, but since he didn’t have an assist it gets mentioned last.
Green is still stuck on one win this season, but Dan Peace (3 G, 1 A) and recent acquisition Alex Miller (2 G, 1 A) did their damndest to get the team off the slide. Perhaps it’s time to sacrifice a goat or something.
Blue 5, Black 3 Black (6-5-1, 13 pts.) held a 3-2 lead after a fast-paced first period, getting goals by Denis Connell, Steve Definis and an unnamed substitute. Paul Marvel then went on a personal jihad in the second, scoring “marvel-ous” goals at 10:39 and 9:25 – the last serving as the game-winner for Blue. Kevin Sakers added an insurance goal at 5:24 and Blue secured their tenth win on the year.
We could go into greater detail with this recap but Bert Archer’s upcoming “Del Val: 24/7″ video series will do a much better job.
DVMHL STARS of the WEEK
1. Jeff Stott (White) 2 G, 2 A
2. Paul Marvel (Blue) 2 G
3. Dennis Reardon (White) 3 G

Guests Welcome
Blue 7, White 3 John “The Blue Label” Walker, clearly rested after a two week hiatus most likely spent napping, had a hat trick pacing Blue to their League-leading ninth win. Scoring leader “Thunder” Dan Wilen turned facilitator, adding two goals and three assists for Blue (9-2, 18 pts.).
White (4-6-1, 9 pts.) did take the lead early in the first period and kept it close in the second on goals by this season’s breakout star “Steady” Eddie Floirendo. “Steady” Eddie has scored seven goals this season, all coming in games against Blue (Fabricated Stat That Could Be True). His second goal of the game made it 4-2 at 8:26 in the second but that was as close at White could get.
Black 9, Green 1
Despite Gabe Howard’sWillis Reed-like return to the ice, Black dismantled Green by a balanced scoring attack. Mike Mooney was one of seven different goal scorers, leading the way with two goals. Black (6-4-1, 13 pts.) scored three goals in every period against Green (1-8-2, 3 pts.). Dan Peace had the lone first period tally for the losing side.
In a game that featured 10 goals, “Baby Jesus” Hickey was the only player credited with an assist. Puck-hogging or shoddy score keeping, your guess is as good as ours.
BAD-ASS INJURY OF THE WEEK: Welcome back, Gabe Howard!
DVMHL STARS OF THE WEEK:
1. John Walker (Blue) 3 G, 0 A
2. Ed Floirendo (White) 2 G, 1 A
3. “Baby Jesus”Hickey (Black) the only assist in the entire game

Black 10, White 2 Denis “The Gentleman Dangler and Robbery Snuffer-outter” Connell broke a personal three game goal scoring drought in spectacular fashion, tallying three goals accompanied by four helpers as Black (5-4-1, 11 pts.) cruised to the victory. Matt Medeiros contributed four goals and two assists in the rout over White (4-5-1, 9 pts.). Black led 5-0 after the first period and 8-0 after the second, prompting the Versus network to switch to rerun of a Saturday morning hunting show. White broke up Bert Archer’s attempt at a second shut-out this season with two goals in less than a minute at the beginning of the last frame. Carmen Marchesano had a goal and an assist in the losing effort for White, who clearly missed the presence of Mike Dzuira. In the spirit of the season, “Baby Jesus” Hickey also scored two goals and had two assists for Black.
Blue 9, Green 2
“Thunder” Dan Wilen scored five goals, increasing his League lead to 21 on the season as Blue (9-2-0, 18 pts.) bested an undermanned Green team in the nightcap. Green (1-7-1, 3 pts.) was led by Brian Hindes and yet another unnamed player (no check, no shout-out), who missed the services of Dan Peace, Manny Johnson (especially his traveling cheering section) and the injured player-coachGabe Howard (#dunkindonutsgiftcardsforshoutouts).
John “The Blue Label” Walker added two goals and two assists for Blue, who now holds a five point (meaningless) lead in the standings at the Break. League historians point out that Blue’s season is eerily similar to the 2010-2011 campaign, when they peaked early and were upset in the semifinals.
DVMHL STARS OF THE WEEK:
1. Denis Connell (Black) 3 G, 4 A
2. Dan Wilen (Blue) 5 G, 0 A
3. Matt Medeiros (Black) 4 G, 2 A
Check back tomorrow (Wednesday) for a post featuring the League leaders in Goals and Points thus far. The results may surprise you! (Not really.)
Blue 7, Black 4
Without the services of healthy scratches “Thunder” Dan Wilen (studying) and John “The Blue Label” Walker (napping), Pat Georgoff propelled Blue (7-2-0, 14 pts.) to the win over Black. Georgoff scored twice in the first ten minutes of the game, thus surpassing the season goal totals of 11 players in our fair League.
But because this is the high-flying DVMHL and no lead is safe (especially when playing Blue), Black mounted a third period comeback led by an unnamed player (no check, no shout-out!) closing to within 5-4 at 7:51. Georgoff then ripped off a short-handed breakaway tally and another goal, assisted by Kevin Sakers, to secure the two points.
Matt Medeiros collected four assists for Black (4-4-1, 9 pts.) and captain Denis Connell led his squad by example, amassing six PIMs.
Green 10, White 10 Green‘s Dave Humes scored with 2:04 left in the game to earn a hard-fought tie against White (4-4-1, 9 pts.). Green held a sizable advantage in shots, cranking 41 to White‘s 25. White scored twice in the third to take a 9-6 lead at 13:37, but Bill McDonnell, Dan Peace and S. Kramen rallied for the tie in the next two minutes. White‘s Carmen Marchesano scored his fourth goal, the apparent game-winner, at 3:09 but White was unable to close out the game, leading to Humes‘ tying goal a minute later.
Marchesano led all players with four goals and four assists and Dan Peace paced Green with a 6 point afternoon. After getting their first win of the season last week, Green is now 1-6-2 on the season and has gotten points in two straight games. Don’t look now, League standings, Green has overcome their slow start and is starting to peak:
DVMHL STARS OF THE WEEK:
1. Carmen Marchesano (White) 4 G, 4 A
2. Pat Georgoff (Blue) 5 G, 1 A
3. Dan Peace (Green) 1 G, 5 A
Both third and fourth place teams won their respective games on Sunday and suddenly the race for the playoffs …still doesn’t matter.
Green 5, Black 4
Bolstered by the addition of free agent acquisition Manny Johnson and new player-coach Gabe Howard behind the bench, Green raced out to a 5-1 lead and held on for their first win of the 2011-2012 campaign. Despite being in the box for a total of 14 out of a possible 45 minutes of game time, Black (4-3-1, 9 pts.) scored two goals in the third period off the stick of Jeff “Wolverine” Sanka in a comeback bid but could not muster the tying tally. Green was led by Dave Humes‘ two first period goals and Dan Peace‘s two points.
Denis “The Gentleman Dangler” Connell, ever the Company Man, deferred to new teammate and current boss Mike Mooney at every turn and therefore was limited to a solitary goal for Black.
But the true hero of the game was player-coach Gabe Howard, who endured the pain of a torn MCL drank many beers while guiding Green to their first win.
White 7, Blue 5
While Green benefited from a calming presence behind the bench in their win, the Blue team’s inept personnel decisions led to a third period collapse against White (4-4, 8 pts.). ”Steady” Eddie Floirendo scored a power play goal at 5:17 to break the tie with the undermanned Blue team (6-2, 12 pts.). Despite Blue holding scoring maestro Mike Dzuira to a single goal in the first period, Floirendo carried White with two goals and three assists as the team scored four goals in the final frame. ”Thunder” Dan Wilen led Blue with 4 goals and 1 assist, but you knew that was coming.
With the win, White is now one point back of Black for second place in the League.

3. Dave Humes (Green) 2 G
